In a historic shift for the sport, the latest FIVB Beach Volleyball World Ranking update has heralded a new era at the pinnacle of the men’s game. Swedish youngsters Jacob Holting Nilsson and Elmer Andersson have officially ascended to the world’s number one spot for the first time in their careers. This milestone comes in the wake of a stellar performance at the Saquarema Elite event on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour, marking a rapid rise for the duo that has captivated fans following Volleyball News globally.
A New Peak for the Young Swedish Stars
At just 21 and 19 years old respectively, Holting Nilsson and Andersson have achieved what many veterans spend a lifetime chasing. Their journey to the top was solidified by a hard-fought silver medal finish in Brazil last week. Entering the tournament with high expectations, the 2025 FIVB World Championship silver medalists proved their consistency and grit against the world’s elite.
According to reports from The Sports Odds, the ranking points math favored the young Swedes during this cycle. By securing 1,100 points for their silver medal and having no points to “defend” from the previous year’s Saquarema event, they saw a significant net gain. Even after dropping 600 points from their previous eighth-best result, the net addition of 500 points propelled them to a total of 8,260 points. This was enough to leapfrog the three teams that had previously sat above them in the standings. Prior to this update, the highest the pair had ever reached was second place.

Shuffling the Global Hierarchy
The rise of Holting Nilsson and Andersson has caused a notable shake-up among the established powerhouses of beach volleyball. Most significantly, their compatriots and reigning world and Olympic champions, David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig, have relinquished the top spot. The legendary “Swedish Jump Set” masters reached the quarterfinals in Saquarema, earning 760 points. However, they were defending 1,100 points from a silver-medal finish at the same event in 2025. This resulted in a net loss of 340 points, causing them to slide down to third place with a total of 7,860.
Meanwhile, the Norwegian “Beach Volley Vikings,” Anders Mol and Christian Sørum, maintained their second-place position. Despite successfully defending their gold medal in Saquarema and mirroring their 2025 victory, their point total remained stagnant at 8,060. Because they essentially replaced a gold-medal score with another gold-medal score, they were unable to close the gap on the surging Holting Nilsson and Andersson.
Women’s Rankings and Notable Climbers
While the men’s side saw a change at the very top, the women’s ranking remained steady at the summit. The American duo of Kristen Nuss and Taryn Brasher maintained their world number one status. Their victory in Saquarema further solidified their lead, as they improved upon a previous silver-medal result to widen the gap between themselves and the chasing pack.
Other notable movements in the rankings include Brazil’s Evandro Oliveira and Arthur Mariano Lanci, who were overtaken by the Swedish leaders and now sit in fourth place. In a promising climb for Latvian beach volleyball, bronze medalists Martins Plavins and Kristians Fokerots moved up to sixth place. They currently sit just behind the Dutch pair of Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot, while remaining ahead of Qatar’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan.
As the Volleyball 2026 season continues to unfold, the pressure will be on the young Swedish leaders to defend their newly acquired throne. With the sport seeing a influx of young talent and tactical innovations, the race for the top spot remains more competitive than ever, ensuring that the road to the next major championships will be a thrilling one for fans and analysts alike.
