ANTIPOLO — In a display of late-game execution and dominant interior presence, the Blackwater Bossing finally barged into the win column of the PBA 2026 Commissioner’s Cup. Relying on a spectacular second-half surge from Sedrick Barefield and a towering debut by Robert Upshaw III, the Bossing overcame a double-digit deficit to stun the Magnolia Hotshots, 97-91, on Sunday evening at the Ynares Center.
The victory was more than just a single notch in the standings for the franchise. According to reports gathered by The Sports Odds, the win effectively snapped a grueling 12-game losing streak for Blackwater that stretched back to the previous conference. Furthermore, it halted an eight-game losing skid specifically against the Hotshots, marking a significant shift in momentum for Coach Jeff Cariaso’s squad.
Barefield Takes Control in the Second Half
While the game started as a low-scoring defensive struggle, the intensity shifted dramatically after the halftime break. Sedrick Barefield, who struggled with only two points in the first two quarters, found his rhythm when it mattered most. The dynamic guard exploded for 24 of his 26 total points in the second half, spearheading a Blackwater offense that outscored Magnolia 61-49 across the final 24 minutes.
Barefield’s shooting from beyond the arc proved to be the catalyst for the comeback. He finished the night shooting 8-of-16 from the floor, including an efficient 6-of-9 from three-point territory. His ability to create space and knock down contested jumpers allowed the Bossing to chip away at a Magnolia lead that had ballooned to 60-49 in the third period.

Upshaw III Makes a Gigantic Debut
Replacing the injured Daniel Ochefu, the seven-foot Robert Upshaw III provided the interior presence Blackwater had been desperately seeking. In his first PBA News appearance, Upshaw logged a massive double-double with 35 points and 14 rebounds. His impact was felt on both ends of the floor, as he also tallied six assists and three blocks in 41 minutes of action.
Upshaw’s versatility was on full display during the closing minutes. With Magnolia attempting a late-game rally, the big man stepped out to the perimeter and drilled a crucial four-pointer to push the lead to 91-84 with less than a minute remaining. Coach Cariaso praised the import’s composure, noting that having a reliable anchor who can perform at his best during the fourth quarter was the missing piece for the team.
Magnolia Stumbles to 0-3 Start
The defeat leaves the Magnolia Hotshots in an unfamiliar position at the bottom of the standings. Despite a Herculean effort from Anunwa Omot, who finished with a game-high 38 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds, the Hotshots were unable to maintain their lead down the stretch. Omot shot an impressive 68.2 percent from the field, but the lack of consistent local support hindered their closing efforts.
Zavier Lucero contributed 15 points and six rebounds, while veteran Ian Sangalang added 12 points, but they were the only other Hotshots to reach double figures. The loss marks Magnolia’s first 0-3 start since the Season 47 Governors’ Cup, a worrying trend for a team traditionally known for its consistency and veteran leadership.
Bench Depth and Rebounding Edge
A key factor in the reversal was Blackwater’s dominance in the secondary categories. The Bossing bench outscored their Magnolia counterparts 41-24, with players like Dave Murrell contributing 9 points and Abu Tratter adding 8 points and 7 rebounds. This depth allowed Blackwater to maintain high energy levels during their 30-point fourth-quarter eruption.
The rebounding battle also went heavily in favor of Blackwater, 44-33. By controlling the glass and limiting Magnolia to second-chance opportunities, the Bossing were able to dictate the tempo of the final frame. Christian David also played a vital role, contributing 7 points and making key free throws in the final 36 seconds to seal the outcome.
Looking Ahead to Basketball 2026
With this breakthrough win, Blackwater moves to a 1-2 record, gaining much-needed confidence as the Basketball 2026 mid-season tournament progresses. The synergy between the seasoned Barefield and the newcomer Upshaw III suggests a high ceiling for the Bossing if they can maintain this level of play. For Magnolia, the focus shifts to internal adjustments as they look to avoid falling further behind in the race for the playoffs.
